Public Speaking Quotes
![]() |
When engaging in public speaking, quotes can help you make important points to your audience. No matter what subject you're speaking on, you can likely find quotes that relate to it. It is important to strike the right balance between quotes and original material when giving a speech. You don't want to use up your entire speech just repeating other people's quotes. Quotes are great when it comes to starting a speech or ending one. Good quotes have a lot of impact and are so easy to locate.
For example, you can find books filled with all kinds of quotes at your local library. They are sometimes arranged by subject, type of speech and/or type of speaker. For example, one book may contain presidential quotes and another may contain celebrity quotes. Or, you might find a book of quotes gathered from many different sources on a particular subject like motivation or inspiration. A good quote is brief yet has a powerful impact. If you can choose a quote from someone who is very well respected in their field, all the better.
Some quotes are serious while others are funny. The type of quote or quotes you will want to include in your speech depends upon the type of speech you're giving. Sometimes, a humorous quote can interject some much needed cheer into a speech that is somber or serious. When you make your audience laugh, you disarm them. Their defenses are lowered and they are more willing to really hear what you have to say. If you have trouble finding the perfect quote in a book, try the Internet.
There are all kinds of public speaking quotes sites online. You can look up quotes by the person who said them, by theme, or by era. There are even daily email deliveries of inspirational and/or motivational quotes that can be sent to your inbox. You will be amazed how many quotes there are out there, ranging from BC times to modern times. People have a lot to say -- always have, always will. No matter what subject you're speaking on, there is a quote that can make your speech even more compelling than it already is. It's your job (or the job of your speech writer) to decide which quote is best for your particular speech.
